Should I Be Concerned At All With A High Bun/Creatinine RatioPatient: Hi, I got a few tests back. My GFR was 88 and my blood urea nitrogen (BUN) was 25 and creatinine was 0.84 making my bun/creatinine ratio 29.8. my GFR is better than what it was, but I also stopped my NSAIDS completely a few weeks ago. Should I be concerned at all with a high bun/creatinine ratio?

Doctor: A blood urea nitrogen test measures the amount of nitrogen in your blood that comes from the waste product urea. Urea is made when protein is broken down in your body. Urea is made in the liver and passed out of your body in the urine. A BUN level is done to see how well your kidneys are working. The BUN/Creatinine ratio should be in normal range if your kidneys are getting rid of both things. If it is high or low, then your kidneys are not filtering out one of the items properly. The main number you should look at is your creatinine. The higher the number, the lower your kidney function. 0.5-1.1mg/dl is the normal range for female. It will very somewhat depend upon your age and body size, so 1.3 is still really good function. As for your phosphorus, either eat more foods rich in phosphorus such as cheese, pork, fish. Do not let your phosphorus get to high, otherwise it will cause you to itch like you have poison ivy. If your phosphorus gets to high, you need to counter it with more calcium. Everything is kind of linked together, and you should do a lot of reading about lab values and what effects you can do to make this value go up or down. The closer to normal you keep your labs, the better you will feel.
