Questions: I was diagnosed with PKD 2 years ago, and both I and my husband want to have a baby. But I am worried with my illness, and I am worried that whether PKD can cause damage to my baby. Can you help me? Can I gey pregnancy with PKD?
Answer: As we know, polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic kidney disease with numerous fluid-filled cysts in kidneys, and kidney cysts will be increased and enlarged over time, which can cause kidney damage.
Since you have PKD and you want to get pregnancy, you need to think that you baby may also have PKD after he/she is born, so you need to have psychological preparation if your baby is unfortunately got PKD.
Wether you can get pregnancy or not is all depending on your own illness condition. When people is diagnosed with PKD, they have the same ability of getting pregnancy with normal people. However, for end stage kidney failure patients and dialysis patients, their ability to have baby will be decreased. In this condition, PKD patients are not recommended to get pregnancy, and kidney failure and dialysis are all harmful for patients with PKD, which will make a poor prognosis for them.
For PKD patients with normal blood pressure and normal kidney function, they can get pregnancy and have a baby safely. However, if patients has high blood pressure with PKD, they may have risk of getting pregnancy. Because high blood pressure will make great damage to kidneys and pregnancy will also cause high blood pressure, thus will make more serious damages to kidneys. So in this condition, we don’t recommend these patients to have pregnancy.
When PKD patients get pregnancy, they should have regular test to observe their illness and follow the advices of their doctors.
