Patient: I am 52 and have known of my PKD since I was 20. Therefore my creatinine has been monitored most of my life. Today I found out that it has elevated to 155. What does this mean as far as progressive of the disease.
Doctor: Hi, serum creatinine is measured to reflect how well the kidneys are function and high creatinine level in blood usually indicates kidney function has been impaired. Creatinine level 155 in blood is not high enough to require dialysis, but it is a bad sign. The following is the detailed introduction about it, and hope it is help for you.
Serum creatinine level and kidney function
Creatinine is a waste product with small molecular weight. It circulates with blood and finally come to kidney. As it can pass through kidney, so excess creatinine is discharged out of the body through urine. When kidney is damaged, it filters less blood and under such a condition, creatinine produced in the body can not be removed timely, as a result of which, serum creatinine level increases. For this reason, creatinine level is always measured to reflect kidney function in medicine. You said you are a PKD patient, so you need to do medical test regularly, so as to know about your kidney condition timely.
High creatinine level in blood indicates serious kidney damage
Normal serum creatinine level fluctuates in the range 0.5-1.3mg/dL or 44-106umol/L. Although creatinine level 155 is not high enough to threaten one’s life, but it means kidney function has been damaged severely.
Our kidney contains about two million nephron and when only a small part of them are damaged, residual kidney function is strong enough to maintian the normal life. According to clinical studies, serum creatinine level begins to increase when at least a half of kidney function is impaired. You said your current creatinine level has been elevated to 155. Although it is not a very high level, but it means your kidneys have been damaged so badly. Under such a condition, if you do not take any treatment to stop illness progression, your serum creatinine level will keep increasing and finally dialysis or kidney transplant will be required for life safety.
