Question: I went to the nephrologist yesterday and found out I had 1.9 creatinine level, I was wondering if this means something bad. And the doctor told me that I have only 30% kidney function. Then how does he know my kidneys are only working 30%? Does creatinine level 1.9 means only 30% kidney function?
Answer: You said your creatinine level is 1.9 now, which is much higher than the normal level 0.5-1.2 mg/dl, and this means your kidneys have been damaged severely.
Creatinine is the waste product of muscle metabolism, which is mainly excreted by kidneys. Since creatinine is a small molecule material in blood, so it can be excreted normally when the kidneys can work normally or the kidney function is more than 50%. However, when the kidneys are damaged severely and kidney function is less than 50%, the creatinine cant be excreted normally, which will be elevated.
Creatinine 1.9 means the kidneys have been damaged severely, although it is not so higher than the normal level, but it means you have less than 50% kidney function. But only depending on the creatinine level, it cant tell you your kidney function is 30%, you may need to do some other specific tests to diagnose your kidney function, such as urine test, blood test, etc.
In this condition, you also need to have effective treatment to lower you creatinine level and improve your kidney function. If you don’t have treatment, your creatinine level will increase quickly. When the creatinine level is upper than 5 mg/dl, or you suffer from some severe symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, high blood pressure, severe swelling, skin itching, etc, you may need to have dialysis as soon as possible.
Therefore, since your creatinine level is not so high, you need to have effective treatment as early as possible, which can help lower your creatinine level and protect your kidney function.
Because we don’t have your specific illness condition, so we cant make a systemic treatment plan for you.
