Hyperkalemia, or high potassium level, is a medical term, which is a common sign in kidney failure patients, and the high potassium level can cause severe heart, nerve and muscle problems. So kidney failure patients need to pay attention to what they eat and avoid to eat with their high potassium level, which can be helpful for their illness condition.
Here are the foods to avoid with high potassium level in kidney failure.
1. Fruits
High potassium foods have more than 201 mg per serving, and the common high potassium fruits include apricots, bananas, dates, grapefruits, kiwi, oranges, fresh pears, prunes, avocado, etc. So patients need to avoid these fruits, and they can take some low potassium fruits in their diet, which include blueberries, cranberries, lemons, peach nectar, canned pears, pear nectar, etc (the low potassium means foods contain 0-100 mg of potassium).
2. Vegetables
Kidney failure patients also need to avoid the vegetables high in potassium, which include asparagus, butter beans, potatoes, okra, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, spinach, pumpkin, greens and Brussels sprouts. Patients can replace these vegetables with low potassium foods, such as bamboo, bean sprouts, alfalfa sprouts, wax beans, raw cabbage, peppers, cucumbers, etc. Patients need to know exactly how much potassium the vegetables include before they choose to eat something.
3. Proteins
For kidney failure patients, they need to keep a low protein intake, and they also need to take some high quality proteins. However, since some of the proteins are also high in potassium, so patients also need to pay attention to the potassium content in proteins. For example, nuts, yogurt, beef, pork seeds and milk products are high in protein, but they also high in potassium, so the kidney failure patients who have high potassium level need to change these proteins into low potassium proteins, such as egg whites.
Above are some of the foods that high potassium patients should avoid with kidney failure. Depending on their own illness condition, the specific diet plan will also be different from case to case, so they need to follow the advice of their doctors to make a well planed diet for themselves.
