Kidney failure can be caused by various factors like diabetic nephropathy, drug-induced nephritis and high blood pressure. As for patients, the only thing they can control by themselves is their daily diet. A proper diet is able to reduce burden on kidneys and slow the progression of kidney failure.
Generally speaking, kidney failure patients need to follow the following four rules:
1. Low protein diet
With healthy kidney function, protein from foods is digested and absorbed. Some will be used by the body and some will be metabolized, producing nitrogenous substances such as urea nitrogen and creatinine. And then they will be discharged by the kidneys. If kidney failure occurs, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) declines and kidneys’ excretory ability to discharge metabolic products decreases, wastes of protein metabolites will stay in the blood, which is bad for your health. Low protein diet can reduce the regeneration and accumulation of protein metabolites so as to reduce kidney’s metabolic stress and delay the progression of kidney failure.
2. High calories diet
People needs calories for body function. The calories we need come from protein, fat and carbohydrate. Therefore, kidney failure patients should eat some foods with high calories to meet daily requirement.
3. Low phosphorus and high calcium diet
With the development of kidney disease, kidney fibrosis will be worsened. Glomerular damage will become aggravated and it expels less phosphorus from the body, causing high phosphorus in blood. Patients with high phosphorus level usually have low calcium level in blood. Therefore, patients need to limit phosphorus intake and supplement calcium and vitamin to prevent bone disease.
4. Limit potassium and sodium intake
Patients with decreased urine output, reduced dialysis frequency and high potassium in blood usually suffer from arrhythmia so they need to control potassium intake and eat less high potassium foods like bananas and pears. Patients with severe high blood pressure, swelling or high blood sodium need to control sodium intake.
In addition, patients also need to take treatment to repair injured kidneys and improve renal function. Only in this way can kidney failure be treated fundamentally.
