Does urinary tract infection (UTI) cause kidney failure? Kidneys are responsible for filtering waste from your blood as well as promoting or helping maintain other life processes. As delicate organs, the kidneys can stop functioning for any number of reasons, including an untreated urinary tract infection.
Urinary tract infections
Urinary system is made up with bladder, the ureters and the urethra. When any part of the urinary system is inflamed or irritated, it is called a urinary tract infection. This usually begins in the urethra, travels to the bladder and can eventually make its way to the kidneys. Kidney infections are the worst type of urinary tract infections and generally require more treatment and recovery time than the others.
How does UTI cause kidney failure?
Generally, urinary tract infection is harmless, easily treatable conditions. However, UTI usually becomes pyoelonephritis, an inflammation of the kidney. Kidney infections will irritate and ultimately weaken the kidneys. As we mentioned above, kidneys are delicate organs, they are easy to be damaged. There is no drug or procedure in western medicine that can restore kidney function once it has been lost. If the kidneys continue to be invaded by the bacteria of urinary tract infection, they will eventually lose the ability to function and go into kidney failure.
What is the treatment for kidney failure?
In western medicine, urinary tract infection is treated with antibiotics that will kill the bacteria causing the infection. However, antibiotics only treat UTI but fail to restore kidney damage. To restore renal damage, we need to use Chinese medicines. Some Chinese medicines have functions of dilating blood vessels, preventing inflammation and coagulation, degrading extracellular matrix as well as providing necessary nutrients. These help set up a good environment for restoring kidney damage and improving kidney function. Kidney failure can be delayed and further kidney damage will be stopped.
Urinary tract infection can be painful and should be treated timely. Otherwise, you are most likely to damage your kidneys if this is left untreated.
