Healthy Diet Guideline for PKD PatientsDiet is indispensable for every body. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, diet is also a treatment for your disease. Here is a healthy diet guideline for PKD patients. Hope it can help you.

Low protein diet

Kidney is an organ to filter wastes from the body. Due to PKD, its function will be affected. Proteolysis produces a lot wastes, such as urea and creatinine, which increases the burden on your kidneys, so you should limit your protein intake. Relatively speaking, high quality protein produces less wastes, because its main content is essential amino acid, which can be absorbed by your body. So you can eat egg white, lean meat, milk, fish and other high quality protein in a limited amount.

Fluid intake

In the early stage of PKD, there is no kidney function impairment. In order to reduce the risk of urinary tract infection, you should drink plenty of fluid. But with the development of your disease, your kidneys can not discharge the excess fluid, so you should limit your fluid intake.

Low sodium and high potassium

To control blood pressure, you should limit the intake of sodium, but you can use garlic powder or other herbs and spices in place of salt. Potassium can reverse the effects of sodium to lower blood pressure, so if your blood potassium level is below the normal level, you can increase the intake of potassium. Dried apricots, sweet potatoes, bananas are all good source of potassium.

Avoid foods high in oxalic acid

Oxalic acid easily deposits into kidney stone, so you had better stay away from food high in oxalic acid, such as spinach, rhubarb, beets, eggplant and cocoa.
