Walnuts, hazelnuts, brazil nuts, pecans and almonds are all delicious nuts, which are favored by people all over the world. They have many health benefits for healthy people. But for PKD patients, they have many diet restriction. Is nut good for PKD patients?
Protect you from heart disease
For PKD patients, heart disease is a common complication. Most kidney failure patients die from heart disease rather than kidney disease. It is said that heart disease is the major cause of death for all people with kidney disease.
Though most nuts are great source of fat, it contains high unsaturated fat, which can lower serum bad cholesterol level. Besides, some of them contain omega 3 fatty acids and dietary fiber, which is also helpful for protecting you from heart disease.
Neutralize free radicals
Free radicals are so lively that they react with cells and DNA so as to produce toxicity and damage. Nuts like sunflower seeds have strong ability of scavenging free radicals, protecting your kidneys from further damage.
Help control some of your symptoms
Nuts are high in minerals like manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, fluoride and selenium. Manganese is a powerful radical scavenger. Potassium helps lower blood pressure and reduce fluid retention. Copper and iron is required for red blood cells formation so as to alleviate anemia. And fluoride is good for your bone.
However, too much intake of nut is bad for health because of these minerals, especially when your PKD develops to the end stage. Your kidneys can not remove the excess minerals from the blood. What is more, the processed nuts should be avoided, because some of them are too salty. Salt may worsen your edema and make you blood pressure much higher.
