Can PKD Patients drink coffee? Coffee is a very common beverage in our daily life, especially in western countries. It is believed to be very health-beneficial due to the antioxidants it contains, but for an individual with PKD, is it ok to drink coffee?
Limit coffee consumption with PKD
PKD is a genetic kidney disorder that can cause cyst formation in kidney. Similar with other kinds of chronic kidney problem, it also lead to high blood pressure, kidney failure and other health tissues. Therefore, a tight control of PKD is very important. A study ever published in Novermber 2001 issue of “American Journal of Kidney Disease” reported that caffeine exacerbates high blood pressure in rats with PKD and for this reason, people with polycystic kidney need to limit coffee consumption, because high blood pressure accelerates PKD development.
Besides, high consumption of coffee is also bad for kidney failure. Therefore, for PKD patients whose illness has developed to kidney failure stage, they also need to limit coffee consumption.
Coffee helps PKD patients with kidney stone
In some cases, PKD patients develop kidney stone easily due to impaired kidney function. Small kidney stones are passed easily, but for the large one, it might cause unbearable pain feeling. What worse, it may cause further damages on kidney, which is very bad for PKD patients.
High coffee consumption is harmful for PKD patients, but they can drink four or fewer cups of caffeinated coffee every day, because studies show people who drink caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee everyday are 10% less likely to develop kidney stone.
Coffee indeed benefits our health in many ways, but one our kidneys are affected due to PKD, we need to be careful about coffee, and try to avoid bad effects that might be caused by high coffee consumption.
