What would be the cause of enlarged stomach in PKD? Polycystic Kidney Disease can cause many physical discomforts which we usually call symptoms. Enlarged stomach is one of them which appears easily when illness develops to advanced stage. Well, what causes enlargement of stomach in PKD on earth?
PKD is a different kidney disorder. We say it is different because on the one hand it is genetic, and on the another hand it is not simply marked by kidney damages, but countless cysts in kidney. PKD is about polycystin-1 and polycystin-2. So far no treatment has been proven to be able to remove these two genes from kidney, so there is no cure for Polycystic Kidney Disease.
PKD patients experienced enlarged stomach because of cysts in kidney. Kidney is a fist-sized organ which can help to cleanse blood, produce urine, regulate blood pressure, maintain electrolyte balance and secrete hormone. However, for people with polycystic kidney, due to PKD gene, more and more cysts appear in their kidney. These cysts are fluid-filled and with the increase of fluid, kidney cysts become larger and larger. When kidneys are covered with large cysts, the size of it increase. Normally, each of us has two kidneys which are located in the abdominal cavity. Enlarged kidneys may finally occupy the whole enterocoelia, which usually presents as enlarged stomach.
Enlarged stomach is just a result of enlarged kidney cysts in PKD. In some cases, to protect surrounding organs from being oppressed and damaged, the enlarged kidneys need to be removed out of the body with surgery.
Enlarged kidney is the most common cause of enlarged stomach in PKD. Besides it, some patients may also experience bloating stomach due to fluid retention. Kidneys filter blood and during this process remove excess fluid out of the body as urine. When kidneys fail to do this job, fluid that should be removed by kidney build up in the body. Enlarged stomach appears when lots of fluid accumulate in abdominal cavity.
All in all, enlarged stomach is caused by uncontrolled PKD. If we can stop cyst growth, cyst growth and fluid retention will be stopped and also enlarged stomach is avoided as well.
