We all know PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) is always associated with a series of discomforts like repeated urinary tract infection (UTI), kidney stone, lower back pain, blood urine and anemia, but seldom of us know how PKD affect the body and how it cause these health tissues.

PKD is a kidey disorder, but it can involve all the systems of our body. PKD is a genetic problem and affects kidney function directly. When kidney function is impaired, various symptoms occur and we can not live normally.

Kidney is a bean-shaped organ with multiple functions like adjusting blood pressure, keeping balance of electrolyte, discharging wastes, preserving nutritions and producing urine and so on. For an individual with PKD, when kidneys are damaged by the enlarged and increasing cysts, blood pressure increases, wastes pile up in blood, nutrition like protein leak into urine and electrolyte disturbance occurs. This is the reason why PKD patients always experience symptoms like high blood pressure, proteinuria, hematuria, high serum creatinine level and high blood urea nitrogen.

In early stage of PKD, there are no obvious discomforts as most of the kidney function is not affected. However, with the progression of illness condition, residual kidney function becomes less and less and various symptoms begin to occur. Besides, with the decreasing of kidney function, toxins pile up in the blood and when the amount of toxins increases to a certain level, patients’ other systems like digestive system, respiratory system, and cardiovascular system will be affected. Under such a condition, PKD patients are running high risk for nausea, vomit, breath problem and heart failure and so on. Also, this is the reason why PKD patients are suggested to start dialysis to purify blood when their illness condition develops to a certain stage.

PKD is a progressive disease and affects our body in different ways in different stage. In early stage of it, we may feel nothing serious, but when it develops to advanced stage, our life will be threatened seriously. Therefore, stopping PKD from progressing means a lot for patients to live a longer and higher quality life.
