Can Chinese Medicine Be Used For PKD

Can Chinese Medicine Be Used For PKDPatient: I am a polycystic kidney disease (PKD) patient and currently on peritoneal dialysis. So my question is can I use the Chinese medicine as I am on the dialysis.

Doctor: Dialysis is necessary for PKD patients to cleanse toxins and wastes from the body. It is able to relieve symptoms quickly and effectively. You may see your creatinine and BUN levels drop, blood pressure decreases and pain becomes light. In addition, dialysis also has some side effects. For example, some of PKD patients cannot take dialysis with large kidney size and high abdominal pressure. Infection may also occur with dialysis.

With both benefits and side effects, dialysis is just a kidney replacement therapy, but it cannot repair damaged kidney tissues. In this regard, dialysis is not the best option for PKD patients.

Compared with dialysis, Chinese medicines can be used for PKD. In recent years, our hospital develops a new therapy called Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy to treat PKD. This therapy is on the basis of Chinese medicines but it is different from traditional use of Chinese herbs which are taken orally and take effects with a long time. The medicines in Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy are micronized so that it can be fully absorbed by the kidneys. With osmosis device, active ingredients can come to kidney lesion directly and have the functions of increasing the permeability of cystic wall and preventing epithelial cells secreting fluids. This will generate pressure between the internal and external cysts. Consequently, the fluids in cysts will flow out and be excreted through urine. Kidney cysts can be shrunk to a certain size. What’s more, kidney function will be enhanced.
