I believe many people are familiar with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and kidney cyst. However, most people think PKD and kidney cyst is the same and has no difference in essence. Therefore, they regard PKD and kidney cyst as one disease. Actually, they are not the same disease. The following will introduce their differences in details.
In broad sense, kidney cyst includes PKD, while kidney cyst in narrow sense refers to multiple kidney cyst. At this time, PKD and kidney cyst are two completely different diseases. If it is kidney cyst, it can be multiple or simple, unilateral or bilateral. If it is PKD, it must be multiple and bilateral. Besides, it is called vesica rather than cyst.
The differences between PKD and kidney cyst are as follows:
1. Etiology and pathogenesis
PKD is autosomal genetic disorders while kidney cyst is congenital disease. In addition, trauma, inflammation and tumor can also lead to kidney cyst.
2. Treatment
Western medicines only control the symptoms of PKD and kidney cyst but cannot treat the disease from the root. So kidney cyst and PKD are easy to relapse. In this condition, the treatment should combine western medicine and Chinese medicines together.
3. Complications and harms
PKD patients can experience blood in urine, high blood pressure, edema, kidney dysfunction, uremia. Multiple kidney cyst usually does not present high blood pressure and kidney dysfunction, etc.
4. Family history
PKD patient usually has a family history, while kidney cyst has no family history.
5. Substances inside the cysts
It is urine in PKD while it is usually body fluid like blood plasma, which contains red blood cells.
Through the above information, we hope you have a knowledge about the difference between kidney cyst and PKD. Kidney disease patients can keep a good attitude, take treatment actively. Only in this way can you recover as soon as possible.
