What Happens to My Body When I Have ESRD?Chronic kidney disease is a very tough disease, if it is not managed well, conditions deteriorate very seriously. End stage kidney disease can be resulted in finally. In ESRD, many complications and symptoms appear very obvious.

Urine volume

In ESRD, kidney function is almost lost completely, and large amounts of wastes and fluids build up in body. Kidney can not filter fluids through urine, leading to less urine or no. Uremia, high blood pressure, and swelling occur very seriously.

Imbalance of electrolyte

Kidney has the function of making electrolyte in balanced by removing excessive electrolyte. Much sodium accumulates in body, leading to swelling. Excessive potassium affects heart, leading to abnormal heart rhythm. Phosphorus can not get eliminated from body, making the proportion of phosphorus and calcium imbalanced. Thus, calcium absorption is affected seriously.

Hormones

Kidney also has the property of producing hormones. For instance, PTH which produced by healthy kidney is used to promote vitamin D to help calcium absorption. If kidney function is affected, calcium can not be absorbed, leading to weak bones. Erythropoietin is also produced by kidney, helping make red blood cells to transmit oxygen to parts of body. So, anemia is caused severely with no erythropoietin produced.

Enzyme

Kidney also produce enzyme to control elements in blood. Rennin is made by kidney to control potassium and sodium level. Rennin excretes angiotensin to control blood pressure, if blood pressure is low, angiotensin can promote blood vessel to make high blood pressure high. In ESRD, production of enzyme is much, leading to high blood pressure.

Besides, heart disease, cardiovascular problems which are life threatening appear on patients with ESRD seriously. Patients should get dialysis to replace kidney to filter the blood. However, it is harmful for patients to do dialysis in the long term. Recovery of kidney function is the key to best treatment. Chinese medicine is a good option.
